Canon FS31 Camcorder What's in the Box My previous camcorder seemed compact at the time. It required cassettes that needed changing ever hour or two. Seeing the FS31 next to that older camcorder gives some idea of how small the FS31 really is. Measuring 2.2" wide, 2.3" high and 4.8" deep and weighing 7.9 ounces, the FS31 actually fit in one of the larger pockets in my walking shorts with space to spare. The LCD Screen is a 2.7-inch widescreen color LCD. (Approx. 123,000 dots) I found viewing clear except under direct sunlight. The FS31 has a SRP of $349.99.
The FS31 fit easily in my hand and, when set to the photos/videos option, allowed me to take one or the other without changing settings. I set the image stabilizer but still had some shake when using the zoom as it reached its closest capability. My solution was to hold the FS31 in both hands making two sides of a triangle. I have been wary of moving to flash memory camcorders. My first fear was running out of space. The second was that results would be too small to show on a large screen without loss of quality. My worry about memory was soothed by the ability to add Storage up to 32 GB and swap full cards out for empty ones with ease. There is no fear of ripping a tape that gets caught in a tape holder. The 16 megabyte built-in memory, combined with a removable 32GB SD memory card, would give 48GB in total memory capacity, and 31 hours and 15 minutes of recording time at the LP setting. Even I feel that is more than enough time for people to sit through. Like any new technology there is a learning curve. The effort is well worth it.
