Casio Camera Exilim FC-100 10 MP camera with many functions
The Casio EX FC-100 was a great addition to my photo solutions during the China trip. It was head and shoulders above my S10. With a MSRP of $329.99 as compared to the S10 MSRP of $249.00 I find the additional functions are well worth the extra dollars. At 3.92” (W) x 2.30” (H) x .88” (D) it is not as thin as the S10 but it fit well in my hand. The super clear 2.7-inch TFT color LCD (Super Clear LCD) 230,400 dots (960 x 240) is one of the best I have seen at this price point.

I used this camera as the primary photo shooter during the entire China trip. We were moving from place to place with little time to set up stills. I grabbed many photos while walking down the street, through a moving bus window, climbing the Great Wall, or walking through a temple. I was amazed at the clear shots that it produced with that kind of movement. Including videos I took more than 1600 shots using the Casio Exilim FC100. Yes, a few of the photos were taken standing still. I really liked most the results.

Use of features Continuous shot button. You may have seen those great shots where a tennis ball seems to be pressed deep into a racket or a baseball is just leaving a bat on the way to a home run. This button was able to do that and more. I used it to create slide shows like the one below. A group of 11 photos were shot using this button and then compiled in Photoshop to make the show. Speed can be varied as needed.
I did have an issue with both the Continuous Shot Button and the Slow Button. I carried the FC100 using the wrist strap with the camera held in my hand always ready to snap a quick shot. One or the other of these controls must have been accidentally activated occasionally. This meant I either produced a number of continuous photos I did not want OR I ended up with a slow motion video. Sometimes this was a happy result. Others it was not. For instance when shooting Panda videos I found I had slow motion footage of a Panda that was hardly moving even in normal motion. Slow motion footage of a mountain is also not very desirable. I learned my lesson and, before almost every shot, video or still, I would press these buttons to see what mode they were in. If needed, I then pressed them again to move to or from the function I did or did not require. I loved the capabilities when I needed them but hated them when it happened accidentally. Most often I viewed the results too late to take another shot. Note: I could change the VIEWING SPEED of these videos while they were still in the camera but could not do so with copies once they were on my computer or posted to Flickr. You will see some of these shots if you view the Flickr collection for the FC100.
For most of the photos I used BEST SHOT mode. When in very dark situations I changed to High Speed Night Scene for the Hong Kong City light show photos, High Speed Anti-shake for some zoomed shots, and used others when I felt they were required. I did set the Anti-shake mode to ON for the entire trip. In very dark situations like the Hong Kong Light show I found my best photos and videos were produced while holding the camera on a railing or against a post so as to be a steady possible. Even then the distance from the buildings across the bay required zooming in and that alone showed some shake.
You can take up to 10 Snap Shots during creation of a movie but no flash is available for those Photos. You must use the included charger using the AC Plug. USB charging is NOT an option.

As with many other products I regret the need to package and return the Casio Exilim FC100 Camera. It is one of the more expensive casio cameras that I have tested. After carrying it for almost a month I have learned many of its capabilities and find they are well beyond less costly point and shoot cameras. The reader is the only person who can judge if they require the additional features. First time Digital camera buyers might want to start with something more basic at a lower price point. Those who are looking for a upgrade should definitely look at the Casio FC100. It did the job for me. For more info on this and other Casio products CLICK HERE
