Diskeeper Pro Premier 2007 Set it and forget it works!
It is not often I can say “This software is exactly as advertised.” Diskeeper Pro Premier 2007 fits that description. Install it and let it do the job it was created for. I have received samples of Diskeeper at COMDEX and CES over the years and never installed them. I have had so many problems because I install and remove various programs during tests for a review that I fear that my computer will get more screwed up if I do anything different. We have all experienced it. That is not to be considered a reflection on this product.
A friend sent me an article about Diskeeper Pro Premier 2007 and raved about how good it was so I contacted Diskeeper and requested the latest version. I explained that I had a Dell Dimension that was almost 4 years old that was used to run tests on software and hardware products and IT HAD NEVER BEEN DEFRAGED. The 250 Gig drive has 271,103 files on it. Many are tiny while others are large (12 Gig) video files. This would be a great test of the company’s claims. The software arrived the next day. It still took me two weeks to talk myself into installing it.
The install was effortless. Upon opening Diskeeper I found a central control page called the Diskeeper Console. On the left is an area with easy access to info about the various areas of the software, I suggest starting at “Getting Started.” The other options are Volume Properties, Analyze and Defragment Now, and Configure Diskeeper. The rest of the console page contains the DASHBOARD. This allows you to analyze the drive and check the progress of the defragmentation by Diskeeper Pro Premier 2007. Diskeeper also found the FreeAgent external hard drive that was attached to the computer and worked that over as well. It is fairly new so had few fragmented files.
Remember I said Diskeeper could be set up and left to do its job. That is true. Most options are preset for their best use for the average user. If you want to fine tune this product you may wish to study the 91 page manual. At least take a look at chapters 1, 2, and 3. Otherwise just move around the Configure Diskeeper area in Quick Launch and you will pickup enough to get going.
I started a manual Defragmenting of drive C: as a starting point. This first effort ran in the background most of the first day and 124,557 fragments were eliminated. As you can see by the Job Log that work continues to be done automatically day after day without any effort on my part. 153,564 fragments have been eliminated to date. Diskeeper uses InvisiTasking Technology to do these fixes in the background. I don’t care what they call it. I am really happy. Diskeeper also uses IFAAST Defragmentation (if you turn it on) to make sure the most frequently used files are placed on the drive so as to be more speedily accessed.
I also used Frag Shield to check the paging file area and the Master File Table on C: This option assisted me in making changes in size that were need in both of these important areas to prevent fragmentation of those files. Does that sound difficult? It wasn’t.
Boot Time Defragmentation is another choice that helps you defrag files that cannot be moved safely while Windows is running. It gathers information and, when you restart your system, works on these files during the booting process. I gathered my courage and ran that option. All went well.
I am sure there are many other options. I was pleased that Diskeeper is easy to use for a first timer. I liked the way it led me to areas that I had no idea needed attention and then showed me how to cope with those issues in plain language. Diskeeper Pro Premier 2007 works well and taught me a few things on the way. The system does run faster now. Diskeeper does not hog resources. And I never noticed it was running unless I was looking at the Dashboard. I have connected a Maxtor external drive to the Dell and Diskeeper is defragging away in the background. This is getting addictive. Diskeeper Pro Premium Edition lists at $99.95. There are various versions of Diskeeper available for home, business, and Government.
