IdeaPad Tablet K1 by Lenovo

I have tested a number of Tablets. Many are so much alike it is hard to find any major points that make one better than the other. Several have been pretty good. The Lenovo IdeaPad K1 Tablet is a good move in the right direction. Granted it is heavier than many tablets at 1.65 pounds. However I like the heft and solid feel of this product. The bright RED back cover does a great deal to differentiate the look of this tablet from many others. The $499 price point seemed to be priced in the middle of the pack when writing this article. I think you will see some downward adjustments in many Tablet prices during the next few months. If you dont need one now you might want to wait until Christmas or even later.
The 10.4 x 7.44 x .52 inch measurements make this tablet a decent size for most work. The 10.1-inch, 1280 x 800-pixel display was not as color bright as I could wish for but it is pretty decent. I ran a few Previews from several movie rental companies and found them clear and sharp. The Kindle App held a big full page of text. There is also a choice of backgrounds (White, Black, and Sepia) to ease eye strain when reading.
BTW the book reading was easy with one exception. When using the Kindle App I was sometimes thrown out of reader view and into the available book listings. The bookmarks took me right back to my saved place but it was annoying. Using the Rotation lock solved the issue for the most part.
GOOD Big screen with sharp clean reproduction Easy to do initial setup Decent Back facing 5mp Camera The Keyboard dock looks pretty nifty although I did not test it. Battery charge lasted about 7 hours.
NOT SO GOOD - Quite a bit of heat after completing a charge. - Too many Apps, ads, and Launching Widgets are preinstalled it seemed like overkill.
- I would have liked a mini and/or a standard USB connector port instead of the supplied Docking port/USB Cable. I did have good results using the included cable to copy photos to my Flickr Account. Click the link to view the test photos.
- Along with the supplied AC charger cable there is a headset jack (sound was OK), an HDMI out port.
- Access to SIM card socket not easy to get to but works fine when you figure it out.

After 7 weeks of using the Lenovo IdeaPad Tablet k1 here are some additional thoughts: Google Search saves a web History that is kept until you dump it. You can clear History as with any other search software. It is just not as out front as some are. This does give you access to any destinations you have viewed in the past. On the other hand you may want to clear the history periodically first to save space and second to remove your tracks.
It is easy to remove most all of the preinstalled areas like Games, Entertainment, Mail, and other stuff that clutters up the screen. Then just redo the layout as you want. This gives you much needed extra space for your own apps.If you are happy leave it alone.
During the test Lenovo had to do a complete update of the tablet system. This made me go back through many of the steps for setup. They warned me I might lose some work. Fortunately my Apps, email, and other work seems to be fine.
I have seen the Lenovo K1 IdeaPad 10.1 selling as low as $319.99 with free shipping recently. As big and bulky as it is I found it did the job pretty well, is well made, capable, and worth your time to check it out.
