Samsung Jack AT&T Smartphone/Personal assistant
I reviewed the Samsung BlackJack II for AT&T in September 2008. It was a good SmartPhone. The Samsung Jack, also for AT&T, is similar. Is it an improvement?
The Jack is a good looking phone measuring 4.4 x 2.4 x 0.5 inches and weighing in at 3.6 ounces. The shiny metal and gray exterior is neat. The 2.4 inch TFT screen is adequate for most functions. The QWERTY Key board has bumps on the keys. That made it easier for me to work with. I usually am a one finger message texter on this kind of phone. Instant Messaging includes AOL, Yahoo, and MSN. Setting up messaging and email was not difficult. Just remember to have all your passwords and addresses available. Cost is minimal if you take advantage of AT&T specials. Currently pricing is $329.99 list but $179.99 with 2 year contract at AT&T. A 100.00 AT&T rebate card brings the phone down to an affordable $79.99 with contract. Go to the AT&T site to see what is the current best deal at the time you read this.

More Details
Home Screen The Home Screen comes filled with a number of scrollable functions. You can remove those that do not fit your needs and add others that make your life better.
The MicroSD card location is under the battery. Since cards with up to 16GB are supported by the Samsung Jack this is not too much of an issue.
Battery seems to need charging daily. This is especially so if you are using the all the business functions.
WiFi I connected and used the Condo Pool WiFi and found no issues with the WiFi experience. Each time I turned the phone on it automatically found my WiFi signal and was up and ready.
Bluetooth was simple to set up and use with wireless headsets.
Getting Around Navigating the Jack is easy after you study the getting started manual. There is a locking feature that can be a little difficult but it is great if you carry the Jack in your pocket or purse. The direct access keys for GPS, Camera, Messaging, Symbol/Space, MediaNet, and Silent are very handy.
3.2 MP Camera The camera, like many other phone cameras, does not have a flash. 3.2 MP is an improvement over the 2.0 MP cameras in previous BlackJack Models. There is a 2X Zoom. Videos were good in daylight but dark in low light situations. Video Share is fun when you have a two year old grandson. See some more Photo/Video samples by clicking here.
The GPS called AT&T Navigator was as easy to work with as any. I tested it when traveling to and around Atlanta and then to South Carolina.
The included 3.5 stereo adaptor cable is a BIG plus for most users.
I had to install the Windows Mobile Device Center software to use the USB connection for syncing. You can also remove the storage media to retrieve photos and videos directly from the source. Other media can be uploaded in the same manner.
Using Windows Mobile Device center will require some getting used to if you are new to it. I started by going to File Management in the main screen and locked the program up when I tried to copy photos and videos to a new folder on the Lenovo ThinkPad R400 loaner. After recovering from that I clicked on the Pictures, Music, and Video icon. That allowed me to sync 36 pictures/videos from the Jack to the ThinkPad. Simple but not intuitive. I suggest you refer to the manual and take a few tutorials while you learn the ins and outs of the Jack.

I liked the phone. It has more capability than I would normally use. I like the idea that those functions are there if I ever need them. Business users should take a long look at the Samsung Jack phone. Anyone who needs data capabilities as well as just plain fun features will be happy. The price is right and the capabilities are plentiful. Some of the services and functions require added costs to the user. Be sure to check that with AT&T.
