XPERIA X10 From Sony Ericsson for AT&T Android with a plus or two
When I went to the local AT&T store to see what was new I noticed the XPERIA X10 right next to the iPhone display. The XPERIA X10 looked like a jewel. (That is not to disparage the iPhone. It looked fine also.) The slick rounded edges, 4” screen, and clean black look called to me. The color is called Sensuous Black. The XPERIA X10 is very good looking. At 4.8 ounces and 4.7 x 2.5 x 0.5 inches in size the Xperia X10 in not a tiny package. The cost for the phone with a two year contract is $149.99. That is a 200.00 savings from the full retail price. (AT&T has recently reduced the price to $99.99) The contract also requires a minimum data service plan of $15.00 per month and must be a new activation. After using the phone for a month I recommend a higher data plan if you want to use the full capabilities of the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10. As with any phone/plan I suggest you ask friends how the service provider measures up as far as signal strength and availability in your area.
In The Box Xperia X10 Phone Stereo Hands-free Headset 2GB microSD Card (Can use up to 32GB card) USB Cable Wall Charger PC Sync Software Battery
The camera is 8.1 Megapixel with a digital zoom up to 16X, Image Stabilizer, Geo Tagging, Flash, Scene and Smile recognition, face detection (up to 5 faces), Night Mode, and touch capture. It uses a PHOTO LIGHT NOT A FLASH. I had to turn the light on and off manually. I would have preferred a flash. The camera options are extensive and require some time learning them. TimeScape: To quote Sony Ericsson: “Every event - text, multimedia and email messages, web service updates - appears as a tile in a chronological flow on the screen. You can see a snack-size preview of an event before choosing to view the full content. With the infinite button, you can view all communications for a contact.” This can include Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter and others, Calendar, missed calls, photos, and many other items. It is possible to set up an online area to track and follow the results.
Mediascape: is a similar area that arranges and gives access to Photos, Videos, and Music.
TimeScape and MediaScape seem to be specific to the Sony Ericsson product line. Once you become familiar with them you will find they are very helpful. Until then you will find they are not easy to setup and use.
Music and calls are available through the included hands-free stereo headphones (3.5mm jack) or Bluetooth. Sound was loud and clear.
The Android APP store is full of many free/paid APPs that help with work and fun. WI-FI worked when need and available.
I have been very satisfied with AT&T’s signal strength in Key West. The XPERIA X10 did not give me as many bars I am used to. This was not frequent but was noticeable. The 3G was available all the time and helped speed data work.
PROS Great looking exterior and screen 8.1 MegaPixel camera 4 inch screen is great for surfing the internet HD video Does most everything you would want on a phone
CONS Camera uses a LIGHT not a FLASH Phone freezes up occasionally Major users will need to charge the battery frequently Slightly steeper learning curve than others
The XPERIA X10 is a good phone in a great looking package. Like others it is in the forefront of the movement to make your cell phone into an on the road substitute for your laptop. It comes close. There are other companies that stick close to the Android format that make it easy to use and move between phones without the need of reeducation. If you like the look and will take the time to learn the proprietary setup for some functions I feel you will be happy with the XPERIA X10.
